This week stays inside one sentence and refuses to hurry past the noun.
The sentence
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.”
John 14:6, World English Bible
Thomas has just said they do not know the way. Jesus does not hand him a map. He names a person. “The truth” sits between “the way” and “the life,” and it is something he says he is, not a lens the disciples get to adjust.
How we will read it
John 14 is a room, not a slogan file. The sentence answers a question already on the table: where Jesus is going, and how anyone else gets there. Pull the verse out of that room and it turns into a gavel. Leave it in the room and it is a promise with an edge.
A few things we will not do with it:
- Treat “truth” as a mood the listener already agrees with.
- Pretend the exclusive claim is a later addition to a softer Jesus.
- Skip the comfort in the same chapter so the verse only functions as a weapon.
The confidence this sentence gives is personal before it is tribal. The confidence it takes away is the idea that we get to redraw the way.
